Gundo Aurel Weiler has been appointed by WHO’s Director-General as WHO Representative in Greece, as well as Head of the WHO Office on Quality of Care and Patient Safety in Athens.
Weiler succeeds João Breda, who concluded his 5-year tenure in Greece on 31 August 2026.
Weiler has more than 25 years of experience with WHO under his belt, leading organizational change at country, regional and global level, and supporting countries across Africa, Asia and Europe in developing integrated approaches to health, development and emergencies.
He first joined the WHO/Europe main office in 2020 as Director for Country Support and Partnerships and coordinated the development of the Second European Programme of Work, 2026–2030. In 2025, he was appointed Director of Prevention and Health Promotion.
Prior to joining WHO/Europe, Weiler worked as Director for Data, Strategy and Innovation at the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific; WHO Representative in the Philippines; Coordinator of the Global HIV Programme and the Global Hepatitis Programme at WHO’s headquarters in Geneva; and Communicable Disease Coordinator at the WHO Country Office in Ukraine.
Earlier in his career, Weiler engaged in clinical, research and nongovernmental community work in Australia, France, Germany and the Philippines.
In his new role in Greece, Weiler will, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and national partners, advance shared national health priorities and will capitalize on Greece’s experience and commitment to ensuring that patients across the WHO European Region get the best possible treatment and care.
Weiler holds a degree in medicine from Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany, a doctoral degree in social medicine from the Free University of Berlin, and a degree in health systems management from the University of London in the United Kingdom.
He is married with 3 children.
